‘Imiloa Astronomy Center presents the next Tea Chat with JoAnn Aguirre from 2-3 p.m. today in honor of Father’s Day — “Real Men Do Drink Tea.” Tea culture is mistakenly viewed as the realm of women, but history demonstrates otherwise.
According to legend tea was discovered in 2737 BC by the Chinese Emperor and herbalist Shen Nung, also known as the Father of Agriculture. Since that time, a gendered division of labor has characterized conventional tea production with men dominating almost all aspects of production, except for harvesting. Aguirre will explore the history of the men behind tea, from its ancient beginnings to today’s contemporary tea culture.
Delicious tea and pupus will be served at the free event. All are welcome — women, too! Aquirre is the owner of the Hilo tea shop called Teaching Tea located at 697 Manono St., Suite 108B. For information on upcoming Tea Chats, visit www.imiloahawaii.org.
